Elements of the traditional jazz funeral



Dirge - music of mourning, performed at close of funeral and accompanying casket to grave site. Examples:


Hymn - music of meditation, performed at funeral or graveside. Examples:

  • Just A Closer Walk With Thee
  • We Shall Overcome
  • Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
  • In The Garden
  • The Old Rugged Cross

March & Second Line - music of celebration following departure from the grave, with praise for the deceased and the living. Examples:


Other Dixieland/Blues


Party - more Dixieland, secular dance music, light jazz, ... At this point the Band of Praise’s work is essentially done; playing a few Dixieland tunes in the proper spirit if requested. Music for a continuing reception or party would be a separate booking, through Band of Praise or another.
